Extreme Weather Guidelines

CYSL EXTREME WEATHER GUIDELINES
In all weather situations, it is the primary responsibility of parents and coaches to consider the safety of our players. If parents or coaches have any concerns about safety given weather conditions such as heat/humidity, lightning, or cold, the activity should be delayed or rescheduled until conditions are considered safe. Referees may not force a team to start or continue play in such conditions, but any decision by a referee that play should be suspended due to weather shall be accepted by the coaches.
Hot Weather
If the temperature during a practice or game is expected to or does exceed 90 degrees, then the actual or forecasted high heat index should be determined. Play or practice is permitted if the heat index is under 105 and heat management should be considered. If the heat index is between 105 and 115, U11 and under play or practice is not permitted. U12 and above may play or practice with proper heat management. If the heat index is above 115, no play or practice is permitted.
Heat Management : Per the recommendations of the United States Soccer Federation “Youth Soccer Heat and Hydration Guidelines,” players are encouraged to drink water before and during practices or games. Rest in shaded area should be made available, as well as wet/cold towels for the head and neck. During games, at least one water break per half is required, and additional breaks are allowed at the discretion of the referees and coaches. Be aware of signs of heat illness, exhaustion and stroke: fatigue, weakness, nausea, vomiting, headache, muscle cramping, dizziness. Begin cooling efforts immediately.
Cold Weather
Per the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook, a wind chill of 30 degrees or below can put athletes at risk. If school activities are cancelled by Omaha Public Schools, or if the wind chill is 30 degrees or below, all games or practices are cancelled.
Lightning
Per the recommendation of U.S. Youth Soccer “Lightning Safety Outdoors,” when lighting is seen or thunder is heard, regardless of rain, play or practice should stop and all participants and spectators should move indoors or into cars as soon as possible. Play or practice may resume 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning.
